Eyelid Conditions and Surgery

Common Conditions

  • Ptosis: Drooping upper eyelid.
  • Ectropion/Entropion: Eyelid turning outward or inward.
  • Blepharoplasty: Removal of excess skin/fat for functional or cosmetic reasons.

Post-Operative Care Instructions

Wound Care

  • Cold Compresses: Apply cold compresses (ice pack wrapped in cloth) for 10-15 minutes every hour while awake for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Cleaning: Gently clean the eyelids with cooled boiled water and sterile gauze as instructed.
  • Ointment: Apply prescribed antibiotic ointment to the suture line 3-4 times daily.

Activity Restrictions

  • Sleeping: Sleep with your head elevated on 2-3 pillows for the first week to minimize swelling.
  • No Bending/Lifting: Avoid bending or heavy lifting for 2 weeks to prevent bleeding.
  • Makeup: Do not wear eye makeup for 2 weeks.
  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses for 2 weeks or until advised.

What to Expect

  • Bruising/Swelling: Significant bruising and swelling are normal and will peak around day 2-3, resolving over 2 weeks.
  • Tightness: Eyelids may feel tight or difficult to close fully initially.
  • Tearing: Watery eyes are common during healing.

Suture Removal

  • Sutures are typically removed 7-14 days after surgery (unless dissolvable).

Quick Checklist

  • Take drops as prescribed
  • Wear shield at night
  • No swimming (4 weeks)
  • No eye rubbing
